Sudan’s Civil Defense Forces and the state-run Electricity Company reported on Sunday that the fire at fuel depots in Port Sudan has been put out, and power is being gradually restored to the eastern Red Sea State. This follows drone attacks earlier in May.
Osman Al-Atta, the Director of Sudan’s Civil Defense Forces, said the fire at strategic storage facilities and other affected sites in Port Sudan has been fully extinguished. He explained that the firefighting efforts were difficult due to the large amounts of oil stored at the sites.
The Electricity Company confirmed that power is being returned to cities in the Red Sea State, but the process is ongoing. The update was shared in a brief statement on their official Facebook page.
Since mid-April 2023, Sudan has been caught in a severe conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has led to tens of thousands of deaths. The exact death toll is not known.
Recently, the RSF has increased drone attacks on military sites and key facilities in SAF-controlled areas. On May 4, drones targeted Port Sudan for the first time, hitting a military airbase and civilian infrastructure. The following Monday, drones attacked fuel depots in the city, causing large explosions and fires that burned for several days.
