Sudan’s main electricity provider reported on Wednesday night that two of its power stations were hit by a drone attack. The strike, carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), caused fires and left the capital without electricity.
In an official statement, the company said RSF drones targeted the Al-Markhiat substation and another distribution station in Omdurman, a city near Khartoum.
“The attack led to a total power outage across Khartoum. This has made life even harder for citizens and disrupted essential services,” the statement read.
Firefighting teams from the Civil Defense Forces are currently working to control the blaze. Authorities said a full technical assessment will be done later to measure the damage. Repairs and recovery efforts will follow.
The drone strike is part of the wider conflict between the RSF and the Sudanese army, which has been raging since April 2023. This brutal power struggle has claimed thousands of lives and triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters.
According to the United Nations and Sudanese officials, over 20,000 people have been killed and 15 million displaced by the fighting. However, independent research by American scholars estimates the death toll to be much higher, possibly reaching 130,000.
