Russian Drone Strikes Ukrainian Train Amid Ceasefire Proposals

by Belinda

A Russian drone struck a civilian freight train in Donetsk Oblast on May 12, injuring the driver, Ukrainian Railways reported, as Kyiv continues to push for a ceasefire.

Ukraine, along with its European allies, proposed a 30-day unconditional truce starting on May 12, but Moscow has rejected the offer.

Ukrainian Railways reported on Telegram, “Truce proposals are being ignored, attacks on railway infrastructure continue.”

The strike hit the locomotive, causing shrapnel wounds to the driver’s leg, but officials confirmed his life is not in danger. The attack did not disrupt railway traffic, according to the statement.

Ukraine’s railway network has been vital throughout Russia’s war, and it has been targeted multiple times by Russian forces.

President Volodymyr Zelensky announced plans to visit Turkey on May 15, saying he expected Russian President Vladimir Putin to join him. Zelensky reiterated calls for an unconditional ceasefire, stating, “We expect a ceasefire from tomorrow. This proposal is on the table.”

Zelensky believes that a complete and unconditional ceasefire would create the conditions for peace talks.

As Ukraine’s allies urge direct talks between the two nations, Putin has rejected the ceasefire but suggested peace talks could begin in Istanbul on May 15.

The Kremlin has not responded to Zelensky’s invitation for a face-to-face meeting between the two leaders.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump urged both Russia and Ukraine to engage in peace talks immediately, as the White House’s efforts to broker a ceasefire have so far failed.
