A Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv overnight on May 7 killed two people and injured eight others, including four children, according to local officials. The assault caused significant damage across several districts of the Ukrainian capital.

Debris from Russian drones struck residential buildings in the Dnipro, Shevchenkivskyi, and Sviatoshynskyi neighborhoods. In the Shevchenkivskyi district, the bodies of two people were found after a drone hit a five-story residential building. In the Sviatoshynskyi area, one adult and four children sustained injuries.

The attack also targeted a multi-story building in the Dnipro district, where the 29th and 30th floors were destroyed. A total of three children were hospitalized with burns, and one adult was also taken to the hospital.

First responders were quickly dispatched to the affected sites. Explosions were first reported around 1 a.m. local time, and further blasts were heard around 4:30 a.m., as Ukrainian Air Force officials warned of missile strikes. Additionally, local officials reported damage to a supermarket, a post office branch, and several vehicles.

This latest attack comes just ahead of Russia’s Victory Day celebrations on May 7, with 29 world leaders expected in Moscow. In recent weeks, Russia has escalated attacks on Ukrainian civilians, with casualties reported in cities including Kryvyi Rih, Sumy, Odesa, Kharkiv, and Kyiv.

On May 4, a Russian drone attack on Kyiv injured 11 people, including two children, and caused significant damage to a shopping mall.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had proposed a three-day ceasefire for the Victory Day period between May 7 and 9, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected the proposal, calling it a “theatrical performance” aimed at easing Russia’s international isolation and creating a more favorable atmosphere for Moscow.
