Port Sudan Hit by Drone Strike for Fifth Day Amid Escalating Conflict

by Belinda

Port Sudan, a key city in eastern Sudan, came under drone attack again on Thursday morning—the fifth such strike in as many days—as fierce fighting continues between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Eyewitnesses reported hearing explosions across the city. According to foreign media, Sudanese army air defenses responded to the attack, which lasted for about 45 minutes.

The drone strike reportedly targeted the headquarters of the air force college in Port Sudan. So far, there is no official information about casualties or damage. Neither the army nor the RSF has commented on the incident.

Port Sudan has become the temporary administrative capital and the main base of the Sudanese government since the conflict began in April 2023.

Sudanese authorities have often blamed the RSF for drone attacks on civilian infrastructure, including power plants and other facilities in cities such as Merowe, Dongola, Dabba, and Atbara.

The RSF and the army have been fighting for control of Sudan since April 2023. The war has caused widespread destruction and created one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters.

According to the United Nations and local officials, more than 20,000 people have died and 15 million have been forced to flee their homes. However, U.S.-based researchers estimate the death toll could be as high as 130,000.
