Egypt has voiced strong support for Sudan after recent drone strikes hit civilian and strategic sites in the eastern city of Port Sudan.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, in a phone call with his Sudanese counterpart Omer Siddiq on Tuesday, condemned the attacks and stressed the urgent need to de-escalate the situation. He said a ceasefire is essential to restore calm and allow humanitarian aid to reach those in need, according to a statement from Egypt’s Foreign Ministry.
Sudan’s foreign minister thanked Egypt for its support and expressed hope for more cooperation and communication with Cairo in the near future.
The attacks on Tuesday targeted key sites in Port Sudan, a major city on the Red Sea. Among the locations hit were an international airport, a hotel near the temporary presidential palace, and a port used for oil exports.
Although no group has claimed responsibility, Sudan’s military has accused the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of carrying out the drone strikes. The attacks began on Sunday and have escalated tensions in the region.
Sudan has been gripped by a deadly conflict since April 2023, when fighting broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF. Tens of thousands have been killed, although the exact number remains unclear.
The International Organization for Migration reports that more than 15 million people have been displaced by the violence, both inside Sudan and in neighboring countries.
