A drone attack struck a hospital in the city of El-Obeid, southern Sudan, on Thursday, killing and injuring several people, according to eyewitnesses.
The attack targeted the Military Medical Corps Hospital, which is affiliated with the Sudanese army, in El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State. Witnesses told Anadolu Agency that the hospital was evacuated following the strike. However, no exact number of casualties has been confirmed.
As of 17:20 GMT, no group has claimed responsibility for the drone attack, and Sudanese authorities have not issued an official statement.
This incident follows a series of violent events in the region. Just a day earlier, the Sudanese Doctors Network reported that four civilians were killed and eight others wounded in artillery shelling by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in El-Obeid.
Last Saturday, the Sudanese government accused the RSF of conducting an aerial attack on El-Obeid Prison, which killed 21 people and injured 47. The RSF has not responded to the accusation.
Sudan has been engulfed in conflict since April 2023, as the RSF and the army battle for control of the country. The war has led to one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
According to the United Nations and local authorities, more than 20,000 people have been killed and 15 million displaced. However, U.S.-based researchers estimate the death toll could be as high as 130,000.
