Fire Breaks Out After Russian Drones Strike Kharkiv’s City Center

Russian drones attacked a medical facility in Kharkiv late on February 28, sparking a fire in Ukraine’s second-largest city. The strike was reported by Mayor Ihor Terekhov.

The drones also hit an area near a gas station and damaged a building next to a high-rise apartment block. A shopping mall, car dealership, and fire station were also damaged in the attack.

Regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov said that all the strikes hit central districts of the city. Emergency crews responded at several sites.

At least seven people were injured in the strikes. Ukraine’s State Emergency Service reported that 64 people were rescued, including a child.

Kharkiv Oblast in northeast Ukraine often faces attacks from Russian missiles, drones, and glide bombs launched across the border.

Earlier this month, on February 11, Russia carried out an airstrike on the village of Zolochiv in Kharkiv Oblast. That attack injured at least six people, including a 12-year-old boy. Three people were hospitalized, and others received medical help at the scene.

Zolochiv is a small village with a pre-war population of about 7,700. It is located around 15 kilometers (10 miles) south of the Ukraine-Russia border and about 35 kilometers (20 miles) from Kharkiv city.
