Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense has officially approved the deployment of the domestically developed Spider ground robotic system, marking a significant step forward in the country’s use of advanced robotics on the battlefield.
The Spider, a compact unmanned ground vehicle (UGV), was designed by Ukrainian engineers with direct input from frontline troops. Its development was based on battlefield experience and the need for a versatile, mobile system capable of a variety of military tasks, from logistics and engineering support to operations in combat zones.
One of the system’s key features is its flexibility. It comes in several variants tailored to specific tasks, and its operational range has been extended in response to military requirements. With its compact size, two Spider units can be transported in the bed of a standard military pickup truck.
Weighing just over 50 kg, the Spider can carry payloads of up to 100 kg. The vehicle is powered by four electric motors, allowing it to navigate complex terrain with high mobility and endurance, even in the face of electronic warfare. The system is particularly adept at maneuvering in tight, rugged environments, climbing steep slopes, and operating at an incline.
The Spider’s battery offers several hours of continuous operation, making it an effective tool for extended missions. It is also designed to withstand enemy electronic warfare, ensuring its functionality in hostile conditions.
In addition to the Spider, the Ministry of Defense has approved another ground robotic system, the Vislyuk, for operational use. Like the Spider, the Vislyuk was developed to meet the specific needs of Ukrainian forces. Its compact design allows for easy transport in a minibus or trailer, and it can carry up to 200 kg of payload. The Vislyuk is equipped with powerful electric motors, enabling it to perform tasks such as towing a stuck SUV or transporting heavy equipment from the battlefield.
Both robotic systems are part of Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to modernize and expand its ground robotics fleet, enhancing its military capabilities in the ongoing conflict.
