China’s new drone carrier, named Jiu Tian, is expected to begin its first mission by the end of June. This launch marks a major step in expanding the Chinese air force’s ability to conduct unmanned aerial combat operations.
Over the weekend, Chinese media highlighted the upcoming launch. On Monday, state broadcaster CCTV officially confirmed the mission.
The initial flight of Jiu Tian will begin a series of tests. These trials will prepare the drone carrier for future use by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).
Once deployed, the “drone mother ship” will help extend the PLA’s air combat capabilities without putting pilots at risk. It is expected to play a key role in advancing China’s military drone technology.
