Ukrainian Drone Attack Hits Russian Town Near Border, Killing One

A woman was killed and another seriously injured in a Ukrainian drone strike on Russia’s southwestern Belgorod region, local officials reported on Monday morning.

The attack took place in the town of Shebekino, near the Ukrainian border. According to Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov, the drone targeted a car in which two women were seated. One woman died at the scene, while the other was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Earlier the same morning, a separate drone strike in Shebekino injured a bus driver, Gladkov added.

Shebekino, home to about 40,000 residents, lies close to Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region. Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, Shebekino and the surrounding Belgorod region have frequently come under Ukrainian drone and missile attacks.

Russia’s Defense Ministry stated that its air defense systems shot down one Ukrainian drone overnight in Belgorod. In addition, it claimed to have destroyed 34 more drones over annexed Crimea and the Bryansk region in western Russia.

The attack follows a major drone offensive by Russia on Sunday, during which Ukraine reported that 273 drones were launched, killing at least two people in Kyiv and the southern Kherson region.
